There’s only one race remaining of the 2023 Trackday Championship season! Perhaps part of the reason why this season has seemingly flown by is the incredible excitement we have been treated to on circuit, from an epic season opener at Silverstone to a gripping penultimate round at Oulton Park and everything in-between.
Focus now firmly shifts to the 2023 Trackday Championship season finale, on the fast and furious Brands Hatch Indy circuit at the end of October (28th). Ahead of the finale, Trackday Championship will be releasing a series of articles looking back at how each of the three classes have unfolded so far this year and which teams/drivers are in the hunt for class championship glory!
It’s now time to delve into how the Class B championship standings currently sit, having previously analysed Class C and Class D.
Trackday Championship’s top class, B, permits cars up between 151 and 175 bhp/ton. In seasons gone by this class has been incredibly competitive, with the championship’s most powerful machinery coming together to put on some epic racing. This year has been no exception. A number of different drivers have earned their places on the class podium in 2023, including four separate winners!
Steve Summers (Datum Motorsport) currently leads the way in the class standings and remains the only driver in Class B to have won at multiple rounds – Silverstone and Snetterton. The #3 driver finds himself 17 points clear of Unique Racing’s Adrian Pottinger, but that’s without drop scores considered. Once drop scores are accounted for, it’s incredibly tight between the two and it’s going to be a fascinating showdown at the final round next month. Team BG’s Ben Grewcock can’t be discounted in third overall either, with the Caterham driver having an outside chance of securing the title himself thanks to an incredibly consistent campaign. Team Rebbieha’s Mchugh/Heslop pairing have been likewise consistent, picking up an impressive podium at Snetterton on their way to fourth in the standings.
Full standings can be found here.
It's not just the class championship that needs to be settled at the season finale either, as there’s the rather important matter of crowning an overall 2023 Trackday Championship champion! Steve Summers and Adrian Pottinger have each strung together strong results throughout the season and will now be looking for one more to try and seal both titles in one sweep. Their main rival for overall glory is Se7en Motorsport’s Stewart Donovan, who currently leads the overall standings by just six points without drop scores considered. It’s set to be an epic title decider in Kent!
While all the afore-mentioned drivers have enjoyed excellent form throughout the season, there are plenty of other drivers in Class B who have shone. John LaMaster claimed overall victory at the hugely-popular Super Touring Power event, while Datum Motorsport’s Mick Presland will fondly look back at his well-deserved victory when the championship visited the picturesque Anglesey circuit in May. Last year’s TDC champion John Lyne, Tylah Motorsport, has continued to utilise the pace of his BMW with two hard-fought podiums, including an impressive display at Silverstone which saw him finish second overall. The highlight of Team KAR’s Roberts/Heath season will undoubtedly be the last round at Oulton Park, where they saw off the competition to record a brilliant victory!
Who will it be to best the class at Brands Hatch? Who will be our Class B champion? We can’t wait to find out.
