Two from two for Motion Motorsport's Drought in 2025!

09 April 2025

Trackday Championship made its Silverstone Grand Prix circuit debut on Sunday 6 April, for the second round of the 2025 season.

Three classes of competitors were all keen to be the first to claim the TDC podium trophies at the current home of British F1.

Qualifying

In Class B, Team Air Supply’s father and son pairing of George and Jack Wright were the first to top the timing sheet in the morning’s qualifying session. Matt Swaffer (Swaffer Racing) briefly improved on the benchmark, but when the first representative laps were set it was reigning Champion Nicole Drought who went quickest. The Motion Motorsport driver improved on her previous best later on in the session to secure pole position for the race, courtesy of an impressive lap time of 2m28.176s.

Swaffer would join Drought on the front row, with Mangoes Racing’s Jack Goes lining up ahead of Wright/Wright on the second row of the grid.

Abbitt Motorsport’s Dan Abbitt looked to be the driver to beat in Class C early on in qualifying, but it was a storming lap by Frogjam Motorsport’s Pummell/Robinson that secured the accolade of fastest Class C qualifier for their #10 Renault Clio. Early pacesetter Abbitt would qualify narrowly behind Pummell/Robinson, with the Harts Racing Honda Civic third.

Stephen Docker continued the fine form he displayed at Snetterton by securing Class D pole position at Silverstone. A.L.E Racing’s Hornigold/Hornigold ended the session as the second fastest qualifiers in Class D, ahead of BC Cars Motorsport’s Colin Wells in third.

Race

At the Snetterton season opener last month, an enthralling battle between the Honda Civic of Drought and the BMW 130i of Swaffer provided plenty of entertainment at the head of the field.

This seemed set to be the case again in Round 2, with Swaffer hunting down Drought for the race lead once more in the early stages. However, this time Goes, Wright/Glover (Clubracer) and Wright/Wright were amongst the action too. A gripping battle for the Class B podium spots ensued, with all five cars in contention. Goes had managed the jump into second, as Drought utilised the battling behind to build a slender buffer.

Pummell/Robinson were looking to challenge the higher-classed cars around them as they led through the opening exchanges in Class C, with Hart/Hart and PRO-AM Racing’s Thompson/Ogden not far behind. Docker continued to lead in Class D, but the likes of Hornigold/Hornigold and Steven Orant (STAL Powered for Racing) were keeping the MX-5 driver honest.

Once the pit window had closed and drivers had made their mandatory stops, Drought was back in the lead – but Swaffer was right on the leader’s tail. Wright/Glover had gained ground into third position, while Goes passed Wright/Wright to take fourth.

Swaffer continued to pile on the pressure in hope of a mistake, but Drought did no such thing. When the checkered flag fell, the Irish driver had managed to pull out a gap 2.439s to secure her second win of the 2025 season. Swaffer’s valiant efforts were rewarded with the second step of the podium, while Wright/Glover earned their first podium in their VW Golf by finishing third in Class B. Goes and Wright/Wright rounded out the top five finishers.

Pummell/Robinson had displayed strong pace throughout the entire race, eventually securing the team the Class C win. Fellow Clio, Thompson/Ogden, finished second in Class C after solid performances from both drivers, while Dean Hyde’s (Tylah Motorsport) consistent rise through the order culminated with a third-in-class finish.

Docker put in a faultless display enroute a Class D hat-trick: fastest qualifier, fastest lap and race winner. The Mazda MX-5 driver should be delighted with his efforts, finishing ahead of a number of higher-classed cars in the overall results. Wells managed to hold off a charge from Enhanced Motorsport’s James Howells, as the pair earned their first TDC podium trophies of the year by finishing second and third in Class D respectively.

Trackday Championship will return on Saturday 19 July for Round 3, at Donington Park. Entries can be made here.
