26 April 2022

Trackday Championship 2022 is here! The iconic British circuit of Silverstone played host to the opening round, with a full grid of forty competitors eager to get their season started with maximum points and a trophy. It was great to see many new faces amongst championship veterans, and this ensured that throughout Saturday (23rd April) there was plenty of camaraderie amongst drivers to complement the competitive, but fair, racing displayed on track.

A bright and dry qualifying session provided perfect opportunity for competitors to test their machinery to the limits for the first time this year, with an impressive array of cars on track. The bragging rights that come with securing the first pole position of the year went the way of Unique Racing, who set an unbeaten lap time of 1:07:438 on their 15th lap of Silverstone’s National Circuit. Team Air Supply narrowly missed out on pole in their VW Golf, with 15Degrees-North lining up third on the grid. Mangoes Racing secured Class C pole by just 0.106secs over McKee Motorsport, while Alister Esam edged Fiesta_Clubracer by an even narrower margin for Class D pole.

As the race drew closer, anticipation of the start grew and it was Tylah Motorsport who capitalized on a fast start to take the lead of the race after lap two – having started fourth on the grid. Tylah Motorsport’s John Lyne didn’t look back from there, putting in a commanding display to take the first TDC checkered flag of 2022. Team Norfolk’s Kevin Stirling surged from fifth on the grid to come home in second, pipping pole-sitters Unique Racing by just 0.141secs after 38 laps. Apple Car Centre put in a solid drive to finish fourth, ahead of first in Class C Mangoes Racing. Special mention to Darren Goes of Mangoes Racing, as he secured the first TDC Grand Slam of 2022 by mustering class pole position, fastest lap and race victory. Coupes & Convertible Racing claimed the first Class D winners trophy of the year, after an impressive display in their BMW Z3.

Abbitt Motorsport and McKee Motorsport joined Mangoes Racing on the Class C podium in 2nd and 3rd respectively, with McKee Motorsport putting in an incredible recovery drive after spinning in turn one of the race. Fiesta_Clubracer repeated their qualifying result by finishing second in Class D, with Greenstar Racing completing the podium. Impressive drives from all!

All eyes now turn to the second round of the season, at Cadwell Park in May.
